Adding to the already tough financial situation for the Liberal Party was the lawsuit that was filed a couple of months ago by Prime Minister Stephen Harper for defamation. And now the Prime Minister has upped the ante by adding another $1 million to the lawsuit, this time for misappropriation of personality. This, after settlement talks between the two sides broke down. Of course the Liberals have come out and stated that they are committed to fully defending themselves against the suit. But that decision could potentially end in the financial ruin of the party. With donor money drying up, or going to paying off leadership campaign debts, the Liberals don't have a whole lot of money to pay for expensive legal fees or pay for damages. Also take into account the expensive campaign that the party just paid for promoting Stephane Dion's carbon tax plan. If the Liberals continue down this road it won't end well for them.
But then again, the Liberals got themselves into this mess by forgetting that Parliamentary privilege only applies to statements made inside the House of Commons. So maybe being smart about the lawsuit is asking for too much from the Stephane Dion and his party.
