Gloria Galloway, the Conservative Party's favourite political journalist must have had a slow news day yesterday when she dug up what she considered a shocking scandal: Edmonton Conservatives are trying to engage in ages-old political tactics!
What am I talking about? Well apparently CPC National Councillor for Alberta Vitor Marciano sent out an email to the 14 northern Alberta Conservative riding association presidents, urging their members to attend a public speaking event by Liberal Deputy Leader Michael Ignatieff, scheduled to be held at the University of Alberta. There, these activists would ask Mr. Ignatieff pointed and difficult questions regarding his stance on issues, as well as how he has flip-flopped on many of these issues. Earth-shattering is it not?
Apparently yesterday was a slow news day if this was all that Gloria could dig up. Political activists from major parties and political movements around the world engage in the same tactics. Just go to a townhall put on by almost any MP in a hotly-contested riding and you'll see it occurring there. There is nothing sleazy or dishonest about this tactic. Marciano, in his email, does not speak whatsoever about disrupting the event. He only requests that they ask pointed questions. In fact, when contacted regarding the story, Ignatieff stated that he would be disappointed if there was no debate to accompany his speech.
We all know Gloria Galloway does not hold the Conservative Party in the highest of regards, but there are times when even she must admit that something is a non-story. As to how she managed to obtain an internal and confidential Conservative Party emailsI would not want to be the person who leaked it to her when they Party finds out it was them.
